Focus on Mervyn Crabtree
Competition Winner 2010
Mervyn is a relatively new member to the Birstall Woodturning Club but he has progressed from being a rookie to the dizzy heights of winning the first annual club competition. This has been achieved in only three years.
It became clear from the start that he 'was one to watch', because he took to turning like a duck to water. He is always looking to advance his abilities and comes to the club with ever more complex projects.
But Mervyn will be the first to admit that in the early days he had a good mentor in Keith Ambridge, a much respected turner and club member, who is sadly, no longer with us.
I think you will agree that the work exhibited here, has pleasing lines.

This image shows the base of the turning shown next. A lot of work has been done to build up the laminations. |

![]() This fluted vase has a modern shape and is predominantly Bur Elm. The base is in two sections which have been glued together after hollowing. The hollow stem is made from Zebrano. |
A collection of small items made from off cuts. |
![]() By gluing small sections of wood together it is possible to create an intricate pattern, as shown in the lid of this box. |
![]() Made as an entry to a club competion, this item had to be specific measurements. |
